This is us
The inventor and her sound board
Creator of the concept: Nadia, wife of Kris (the sounding board, the man who repairs everything as long as he can and makes his own furniture out of discarded, dented leftovers). Our ecological footprint is not that neat at first glance (Kris has five sons, I have one), but we compensate as much as we can, most of the time... We buy mainly second hand, wear out everything down to the wire, love natural materials, prefer to buy from the farmer, focus on indigenous plants, let wild herbs grow and apply ourselves to permaculture principles as much as we can.
The concept
This is Belgian: a collection based on nine colours with which we can realise a huge number of combinations. Socks are sold by the piece, to both you the retailer and the consumer who increasingly buys two different socks at once. To respect the concept, we ask the retailer to buy at least five different styles. You are free to choose the quantity and foot size.
Good to know: the name of the model is embroidered on the inside of the label at the back of each sock. And each foot size has its own toe tip colour: for example, the toe tip of size 17-19 is Purple Plumeria while the toe tip of size 35-38 is Hot Coral. It's all in the details, isn't it!? We are all about stylish sustainable fashion.
Production Zokk’n
Unfortunately, we did not find a Belgian partner who would make socks for us, due to the small quantities and the fact that we are (were) starters. Anyhow, we want to stay in Europe, and in Portugal we visited Fiorima, a modern company in Braga, near Porto, known for their knowledge and quality. Since 1 December 2018, Fiorima has been using energy from 100% renewable sources and since 2020 they have had a photovoltaic system for their own use.
Our yarn consists of 85% merino wool. With 13% polyamide and 2% elastane for strength and comfort. Usually merino socks have much more polyamide and elastane. Merino wool is of course a much more expensive material but it is also so much more comfortable for the skin. Our merino socks have no coating and therefore cannot be washed at 40°C. A wool programme (30°C and 0 - 600 rpm) and wool soap are strongly recommended. So we ask our customers to make a little effort. Some people may cancel because of this, but we strongly believe in our concept and the importance of sustainable maintenance.
Igea (Prato - Italy) is the spinner and supplier of Fiorima. They guarantee that our yarn is spun with mulesing-free wool. So the animals are not mistreated. Since 2010, a photovoltaic system has been active on the ceilings of the Igea warehouses, with 2000 panels, for an annual production of 550 MW, which corresponds to 50% of the company's needs, with an annual reduction of about 400 tonnes of CO². We have not yet visited this company due to lack of budget.
Quality
We don't like clutter ourselves, so how would we be able to sell it?
